The manhunt for a teenage suspect who stabbed a fellow student in the torso on Jan. 18 continues, as the suspect remains elusive, New Rochelle Police Capt. Robert Gazzola said, noting that “due to the suspect’s age, and after consultation with the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office, we are prohibited by law from identifying him.”

Gazzola said that the department and investigators have been in contact with attorneys from the Legal Aid Society who represent the suspect, and are working with his family in an attempt to have him surrender into custody.

The investigation into the fatal stabbing of New Rochelle High School junior Valaree Schwab is ongoing, including the alleged incidents leading to her death. Z'inah Brown, also a student at the school, is facing a second-degree murder charge, though more charges may be pending for other students involved in the violent incident.

“We are working closely with the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office to identify those individuals involved and what roles they may have played,” Gazzola said. “We realize that members of the press and community are looking for specific answers, however, since this is a an active investigation we cannot release information that may jeopardize the investigation and subsequent prosecution.”
